Make a Difference

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.

Robert Frost

Almost four decades ago I wrote that quote in a high school yearbook. In many ways, it was not a statement of teenage rebellion, but a foreshadowing of the path that was about to take in life.

The path was not always easy, but it was always interesting. Throughout my journey , I strove to follow one simple concept – Make a Difference. From my education, to career choice, to travel, and more importantly, my views on philanthropy, that one idea has driven me to keep moving, through the good and the bad, to make a difference.

On this site, I hope to give you some ideas on how one person can make a difference, and in ways that are not always apparent when you start out. After all, it is not the destination, it is the journey.

You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.

R. Buckminster Fuller

If you seriously want to make a difference, you are going to have challenge everything around you, question the concept of “normality”, reinvent the model, make yourself obsolete, and then reinvent yourself and repeat.

There is a Zen proverb that states “Leap and the net will appear”. I have made several leaps, and sometimes even landed on both feet. Despite the anxiety of leaping, I would not trade it for anything in the world.

Some of the most my important projects, and some of the most significant ways I have made a difference, have been based on the idea of leaping and throwing away the model and trying something new. You will see that as a constant theme across this site.
